Soprano Cornet: Paul Ryder
Joined Audley Brass: 2009
Previous/Other Bands: Stone Town, Royal Doulton, City of Stoke
Achievements in Music: Winning a brass section contest as a soloist and in a brass quartet in the Newcastle under Lyme music festival in 1974 when I was only 14. Also, the occasional contest win with the Doulton band and also I have been involved in making a few recordings during my years with them.
Favourite Piece of Music: Too many to
mention, I like a wide variety of music. I enjoy listening to film
soundtracks and classical music as well as playing most original brass
band compositions. Two pieces come to mind, Oceans by Goff Richards and
Contest Music by Wilfred Heaton.
Other Instruments Played: Had a go at the Piano but was all fingers and thumbs so I decided not to carry on so that I could concentrate on the cornet.
Not a lot of people know that:Before playing with the Stone Town band in 1980 I was a playing member of the then Audley Prize Band. Joining in 1973 under the conductorship of Mr. Ray Deakin and eventually playing principal cornet under Mr. Tom Bell.
In 1983 I joined the Royal Doulton band under Ted Gray and travelled with them all over the country, regularly performing many concerts with some of the country's finest choirs, including performing at the Stoke City Garden Festival in 1986 during the Queen's visit.
I also made a couple of appearances with them on the Pebble Mill show at the BBC studios in Birmingham and also made a musical at Wakefield in Yorkshire with the famous actor Robert Lindsay who plays Ben Harper in the sitcom My Family.
